Stay away from speed dating in bars or venues that are known to attract the type of people that you don't want to date, because these are the people who are going to show up. Instead, go to speed dating sessions that are not as publicized or are only for a certain type of people.
One of the biggest benefits of speed dating is that you get to meet many different people in a short period of time. On a typical dinner date you may spend two hours at a restaurant with someone and you may not have a great time with that one person.
Instead of having dinner with one person for two hours that you may or may not like, why not split that time between many different people with whom you spend five or eight minutes each? This way, if you don't click with one person the whole evening is not wasted.
