If you hit the right section (either what column the number lies it, or in what section, i.e. 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36), you'll get paid at 2 to 1, meaning you'll win $2 for each $1 bet, as well as your original bet back. If you bet on the color, odd / even, or on high / low (1 to 18 or 19 to 36), you'll win $1 for every $1 bet, and you original bet back, when winning.
Now, you might also wonder which bet is the best one on a roulette table, so that the casino has the lowest edge over you. But, there is no simple answer because the casino has the same edge on all bets. Therefore, you don't really have to worry too much about strategy when playing roulette. One thing you might want to check though is that you play on a European roulette table, which is a table that only has one 0 and no 00.
