Poker Tips: Playing Texas Holdem
There are several types of poker games, ranging from 7-card stud to Texas Hold'em and many more. Texas Hold'em is fast becoming the most popular type of poker game played across the United States today. Like all other types of poker games, it is not only played for fun in people's homes, but is also big in the casino and bar circuits. Many sports bars are offering it on certain nights of the week where patrons can come and have the opportunity to win chips and earn points, which often carry over from game to game, and sometimes even from bar to bar for tournament purposes.
So where did Texas Hold'em originate? This is not known exactly.
Texas Hold'em, also referred to as "Hold'em" poker, is the most popular variant played in casinos across the United States. Its no limit betting form is used in the main event of the World Series of Poker.
It is also the main game in the World Poker Tour, which hosts world poker tournaments across the globe.
Texas Hold'em can theoretically be played by up to 22 players, sometimes 23 if burn cards are not used. It is generally played with between two and ten people, and is one of the most positional of all poker variants. This is because the betting is fixed throughout all betting rounds.
Though Texas Hold'em is commonly played in other parts of the world besides the United States, other poker games such as Seven-card stud and Omaha Hold 'em may be more popular in other areas of the world.
There is no precise information to date on where or when Texas Hold'em Poker was first played, but according to legend, the first game noted as being played was in Robstown, Texas. This is believed to have taken place in the early 1900s, and first came to Dallas, Texas in 1925.
It was introduced in Las Vegas by a group of card players and gamblers from Texas, which included Crandell Addington, Doyle Brunson, and Amarillo Slim.
Addington went on to write about the history of no-limit Texas Hold'em for Brunson's Super System 2.
Like most other poker variants, the objective of Texas Hold'em is to win the Pot. This is the sum of money bet by one or more players. The pot can be won either at the showdown by forming the best poker hand from up to seven cards available, or can be accomplished by betting to cause the other players to fold, thereby abandoning their claim to the pot.
Though the rules of each poker variant may vary to different extents, the concepts and strategies of the game are often very similar.
