Choosing The Outfitter That's Right For You

An outfitter? Do you really need one? Why on earth should you subject yourself to someone else herding you around the place? You'd much rather holiday on your own, you say. Well, in many places maybe you wouldn't even think of hiring an outfitter but when you are going on an adventure holiday, to some distant game park or on a nature trail, when you have a certain amount of time and you want to pack in as much as possible into it, an outfitter might just be a good idea.

We are not talking about outfitters that drone on about the sights, putting you as well as hundreds of others to sleep. We are talking of outfitters who are more like facilitators who make sure that everything else is taken care of so you have the total freedom to enjoy yourself without getting bogged down with formalities, bookings, confirmations or cancellations. We are talking of outfitters who in certain sports and adventure holidays will take care of all the logistics involved in that particular activity, including the necessary permissions and the safety aspects.

Now how do you go about choosing the right one? It all depends on what you want to do. It would be best to choose the outfitter on the basis of what he is specially qualified to do. Is he a safari guide? A trekking or adventure guide? A mountaineering or underwater specialist? You would do well to decide what it is you want to do and then trawl the web for names. Do remember that in most cases, having a local guide is best. Not only will he know how to obtain the necessary permissions, he will also know how to get it done quickly. A local outfitter will probably get the best deals in booking hotel rooms as well as he will probably be doing bulk booking of rooms anyway.

How do you find an outfitter online? First of all, decide where you want to go and what you want to do. Once you've done that, go to all the sites that come up to see who offers the best deals and gives the best services. There are certain sports that would need permits to be booked in advance so search for an outfitter who has handled that. Some sports and adventure activities have certified or approved outfitters. If you are thinking of a dangerous sport, this might be a good move. There are also lists on the Internet about the various outfitters available.

When you go online to look for an outfitter, do remember to also go to the adventure travel forums. You might find that there are various posts on a particular outfitter. After all, what better way to choose one than "word of mouth?" Not only do you have the chance of picking out just the right one for your way out trip, you could also get ideas about what kind of adventure trips to do if you haven't made up your mind already and are looking for ideas. Just a thought: once you're back, do a bit of social service and post up something about the great experiences you've had together with the details so some soul will get lucky the way you did!
