Credit Card Application Will Not Always Bring You Only Benefits
Credit cards are becoming more and more popular. Credit card issuers are gradually entering all segments of market and targeting all audiences. There are more people who have credit cards than those who do not have one. Alongside with all the advantages that a credit card can bring to a person, there are also hidden disadvantages which every card holder need to know. I would like to emphasize some credit card pitfalls. Knowing them will help you to manage your credit card in the best possible way.
1. If you already have a credit card, be careful in making regular payments in time as well as other payments such as telephone bills, other credit card debts, mortgage and so on. Otherwise your credit card issuer can increase your interest rate. This is called a "universal default" clause and is usually in very fine print on your credit agreement.
2. If we go on talking about interest rate every card holder should be aware that a bank can apply any interest rate on your card even if the state you live in has an interest rate cap. According to US legislation a bank obeys interest rate caps of a state it is chartered in. That is why many banks are based in states where there are no interest rate caps. That is why do not be surprised if living in Minnesota where an interest cap is 18%, American Express will charge you 19% because it is based I Utah where there are no limits to interest rate.
3. A credit card issuer can charge you even if you are an hour late with your regular payment. Late payment fees have increased significantly from $5 up to $50. And who knows what is awaiting us.
4. Read the fine print on your carefully! Even some bank executives and consumer advocates confess, that the last time they read their credit card agreements was years ago. If you really want to fully manage your money you absolutely need to carefully read your credit card agreement. The most interesting is always hidden.
5. Bankruptcy and credit card debt is a nightmare for many credit card holders. There is an interesting fact, though, that bankruptcy is in many cases not a result of spending sprees. Medical problems, divorce or job loss can more often cause huge credit card debt. A person who faces any of these problems usually starts to look for alternative sources of money and misuse a credit card. Very soon he or she may end up with a huge revolving debt.
6. Many credit card users are inattentive to their credit card accounts. They make only the minimum required payment not realizing that acting like this they will never pay off their debt. The debt will increase, annual percentage rate will rise. Thus you will end up paying much more for goods and services than you expected.
All in all you should not be afraid to apply for a credit card. You only need to think rationally. If managed right a credit card can bring many benefits to its owner.
